Time Activity Week: 14th – 19th January 2019
We use the ‘Singapore Maths’ model in our school; we started our journey in 2016. Singapore Maths takes a slightly different mathematical approach; it enables the children to become increasingly confident in using and applying numbers and solving words problems. This is because Singapore Maths teaches students to understand maths in three different stages:
- Concrete Approach – This method allows the children to explore maths using manipulatives such as counters, number disks, dice etc.
- Pictorial Approach – This is when the children are solving problems where the use of pictures are involved.
- Abstract Approach – This is where numbers represent symbolic values and the children will solve problems using their number sentences.
The children have been supported to adapt to these new strategies and this new maths approach has been very positive. The children have been successful in learning new skills, building on existing skills and consolidating their maths skills.
