Speech and Language Therapy at Springhallow
Our purpose is to provide a quality Speech and Language Therapy Service to all children attending special schools in the Ealing borough. We aim to share our specialist knowledge with parents, educational staff and other health professionals to meet the communication and feeding needs of this population.
Who do you see?
The Speech and Language Therapist can help when the child has difficulties with:
Understanding what is said to them
Developing language, e.g. learning new words, speaking in sentences
Speaking clearly
Having conversations
Social skill e.g. asking for help, making eye contact
(Using AAC (Alternative and Augmentative Communication), e.g. signing, communication books
Eating and drinking
What does the provision involve?
For all children, speech and language development happens during everyday activities, throughout the day with different people. The role of the SLT is to give advice and to support parents and staff to help them develop children’s communication throughout the day. The SLT will help parents and staff to find opportunities and effective ways to help a child develop understanding and communication.
If input is needed it will be given in one or more of the following ways:
Targets to go in the child’s Individual Education Plan
Giving specific strategies for teachers and parents to use throughout the day
Supporting class staff to provide the best environment to develop the child’s communication skills
Showing class staff how to work on the child’s skills in groups or individually
Training to staff, parents and other professionals
Specific assessments
The child may be receiving all the necessary support through the curriculum and from the teachers, and additional input from the SLT may not be needed.
What do parents/ carers need to do?
In order for your child to make progress we need to work as a team. Therefore your active involvement in following recommendations at home is crucial. Please let the SLT know of any concerns you have. They will be happy to discuss them with you and together you can find a solution.
